WRIST & HAND PAIN

Pain Care Boise

Common causes of pain in the wrist and hand are CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME(CTS), OSTEOARTHRITIS and TENDON problems.

For CTS ( see our section on Carpal Tunnel Release- No Stitches!).   CTS can cause pain, tingling, numbness and sometime weakness of the wrist and hand. Our minimally invasive technique provides quicker recovery and relief than the traditional open surgical or endoscopic techniques.  We can also consider carpal tunnel or median nerve steroid injections for carpal tunnel problems or post carpal tunnel release pain.

Osteoarthritis in the wrist/hand can be in multiple joints or just one or two joints.  If multiple joints, you probably are not a candidate for steroid or PRP injections and will need to seek potential treatments with a rheumatologist. A common joint to be affected is the CARPOMETACARPAL joint at the base of the thumb and/or the STT(scapho-trapezium-trapezoid joint) on the radial (thumb side)aspect of the wrist. These joints are amenable to steroid or PRP injections.

Common TENDON problems are De’Quervain’s(irritation of two tendons going to the thumb due to overuse), Intersection Syndrome (where 1st compartment muscle/tendon junction crosses over and inflames the 2nd compartment tendons on the back of your hand) and Trigger finger/thumb(where your superficial finger flexor tendons on the palm of your hand get irritated going under their pulleys).  These problems will usually respond to steroid injections.  If not, you may need to consider seeing a hand surgeon.

Damage after injury to the collateral ligaments of the fingers/thumb is another common problem.  This most commonly occurs on the medial collateral ligament of the thumb called Gamekeeper’s or Skier’s thumb.  This may respond to PRP injections.

We also commonly do aspiration/punctures and/or steroid injections of Ganglion cysts.

If you develop chronic wrist and hand pain after an open carpal tunnel release or other wrist/hand surgeries, you may be a candidate for Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (see PNS section) of the median nerve.

ALL of the above procedures are done by our specially trained providers with ultrasound guidance.
